As Israeli bombardments intensified over Khan Younis, the Al Nasser Medical Complex came under a three-week siege. Inside, patients and medical staff endured unbearable conditions. Power cuts were constant, and surgeries were often performed in near-total darkness, illuminated only by phone flashlights. Explosions shook the operating rooms as essential supplies—medicine, clean water, and food—ran out.
Despite exhaustion and fear, Dr. Almoghrabi continued operating day and night. He treated patients with devastating burns, blast injuries, and life-threatening infections, working relentlessly to save limbs and lives, sometimes sleeping only two or three hours a night. “I’m frustrated. I’m tired. My God, I’m really exhausted,” he said during those days.
In mid-February 2024, the hospital was directly attacked and later taken over. Most of the medical staff were killed or detained. On the night of 14–15 February 2024, the hospital was shelled by Israeli forces and subsequently taken over. Most of the remaining medical staff were killed or detained. Dr. Almoghrabi, who had been sheltering there with his family after his home was destroyed, managed to escape under fire. He evacuated patients and staff while shots rang out around them.
Dr. Almoghrabi fled to Rafah, where he worked for several months with Médecins Sans Frontières, continuing to treat the wounded under extreme crisis conditions. Eventually, he was able to leave Gaza for Egypt and later obtained a visa to Belgium.
He is currently studying the operations of the skin bank at the Grand Hospital of Charleroi. His goal is to one day establish a similar facility in Gaza to support burn victims and reconstructive surgery patients. Alongside his medical work, he is deeply involved with Compassionate Hearts for Palestine / Wings of Healing, a volunteer initiative that raises funds for medical aid and prosthetics.
His journey from operating under bombardment to rebuilding hope through medicine and humanitarian work stands as a testament to resilience, courage, and unwavering dedication to saving lives.
